Is Naturopathic Medicine Right for Me?

If you've found yourself asking this question, there's a good chance you're frustrated with your current health or the healthcare you’ve been receiving.

Maybe you've been struggling with fatigue, digestive issues, fertility challenges, autoimmune disease, or another chronic health concern that doesn't seem to have a clear explanation. Perhaps you've had bloodwork come back "normal" despite not feeling well, or you've been told that your symptoms aren't severe enough to warrant treatment.

You’re tired of feeling stuck and want a clear path forward rather than piecing your healthcare plan together from ChatGPT and TikTok influencers. You want a healthcare provider that listens to you and provides answers for why you’re feeling the way you do.

If this sounds like you, naturopathic medicine would likely be an avenue to explore further. But before booking an appointment, it's important to understand who naturopathic medicine is a great fit for and who might not benefit.

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for Naturopathic Medicine?

In my experience, the people who get the best results from naturopathic care are not necessarily the sickest patients. They are the patients who are committed to the process.

Naturopathic medicine rarely involves using single supplement, treatment, or dietary change that magically fixes everything overnight. Instead, it's about identifying the factors contributing to your symptoms and creating a sustainable plan to address them over time.

The patients who tend to do well are willing to:

  • Make meaningful lifestyle changes when necessary

  • Adjust their nutrition habits

  • Take supplements consistently when indicated

  • Follow through with testing and treatment recommendations

  • Understand that healing takes time

Most importantly, they view their health as a partnership rather than something that can be fixed by a practitioner alone.

If you're looking for a quick fix or expecting to feel 100% better within a few weeks, naturopathic medicine may not be the right fit.

If you're looking for someone to help you investigate the root causes of your symptoms and guide you through the process of making sustainable changes, it may be exactly what you're looking for.

The Conditions That Often Benefit Most from Naturopathic Care

Many of the patients I see have concerns that are complex, chronic, or not fully addressed by conventional healthcare.

This often includes conditions such as:

  • Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, previously termed PCOS)

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Fertility concerns

  • Perimenopause

  • Digestive issues

  • PMS/ PMDD

  • Painful periods

  • Chronic stress and burnout

These are often situations where patients have been told that their lab work is normal, that there are limited treatment options available, or that they simply need to wait until their symptoms become more severe.

Naturopathic medicine excels in these situations because it allows for deeper investigation into why symptoms may be occurring in the first place.

What Naturopathic Medicine Offers That Is Often Missing

One of the greatest advantages of naturopathic care is time.

Initial appointments are often up to an hour long, allowing us to thoroughly review your health history, understand your goals, discuss your lifestyle, and identify patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis, we spend time understanding the whole picture.

We also review laboratory testing from a preventative and functional perspective.

For example, many women experiencing fatigue are told that their iron levels are normal because they don't meet the criteria for iron deficiency anemia. However, many people begin experiencing symptoms of low iron long before reaching those thresholds.

I've had countless female patients come into my office feeling exhausted, struggling to get through the day, and wondering whether their fatigue was simply something they needed to live with. After identifying low iron stores and treating the deficiency appropriately—sometimes with iron infusions when indicated—they often tell me they feel like a completely different person.

For some, correcting that single issue has been life-changing.

Of course, fatigue is rarely caused by one thing alone. Other common contributors include poor sleep, stress, nutritional deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, and hormonal changes. The goal is to identify which factors are relevant for you.

My Perspective on Integrated Healthcare

Long before I became a naturopathic doctor, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

That experience profoundly shaped how I view healthcare.

When I was first diagnosed, the inflammation was severe enough that medication was absolutely necessary. Conventional treatment played a critical role in protecting my joints and preserving my long-term health.

At the same time, incorporating naturopathic medicine helped me support my overall health and eventually achieve remission while requiring less intensive medication than I had previously needed.

This experience taught me something important: Healthcare doesn't have to be all or nothing.

I don't believe patients should have to choose between conventional medicine and naturopathic medicine. In many cases, the best outcomes occur when both approaches work together.

There are situations where medications are clearly the standard of care and can be life-changing. There are also situations where lifestyle, nutrition, supplementation, and preventative strategies can significantly improve quality of life.

The goal isn't to prove one approach is better than the other. The goal is to help patients get the best possible results.

When Naturopathic Medicine May Not Be the Right Fit

One thing I believe strongly is that not everyone should start with naturopathic care.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, severe acute symptoms, or a condition that requires urgent medical attention, conventional medical care should always come first.

Similarly, conditions such as cancer and autoimmune diseases almost always require conventional medical management as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Naturopathic medicine may not be the right fit if you’re hoping for the treatment plan to replace all your medications.

While reducing medication use may be appropriate in some situations, there are also many cases where medication is the safest and most effective option available. As a naturopathic doctor, my responsibility is to recommend what I believe is in my patient's best interest—not simply what they hope to hear.

What to Expect on Your Health Journey

One of the most important lessons my own health journey taught me is that healing is rarely linear.

There will be periods of progress and periods of setbacks.

Symptoms may improve, flare, and improve again.

This does not mean treatment has failed.

Too often, people view a setback as evidence that nothing is working. In reality, healing often involves adjusting the plan, reassessing priorities, and continuing forward.

The patients who experience the greatest long-term success are often the ones who stay committed to the process, even when progress isn't perfectly straightforward.

So, Is Naturopathic Medicine Right for You?

Naturopathic medicine may be a good fit if:

  • You have ongoing symptoms and feel like you're not getting answers

  • You want a more in-depth investigation into your health concerns

  • You're willing to make lifestyle and nutritional changes when necessary

  • You value a collaborative relationship with your healthcare provider

  • You're looking for a long-term approach rather than a quick fix

Most importantly, naturopathic medicine may be right for you if you're ready to become an active participant in your health rather than a passive recipient of care.

Because meaningful change doesn't happen overnight.

But with the right support, the right investigation, and a plan tailored to your individual needs, it is possible to make progress toward feeling healthier, more energetic, and more like yourself again.
