THE FAQ’S

Naturopathic medicine is a form of primary health care that focuses on identifying and treating the root cause of disease rather than just ameliorating symptoms. Naturopathic medicine approaches healing using the least invasive therapy possible, usually dietary and lifestyle changes first, before moving to more aggressive therapies like pharmaceuticals and surgery. Naturopathic medicine acknowledges and respects that the body has an innate healing ability so our goal as physicians is remove any obstacles to healing, support weakened systems, and provide the resources needed for the healing process. Naturopathic doctors recognize that all aspects of a person - physical, emotional and mental - are important to achieving optimal health.

WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?

WILL INSURANCE COVER MY VISIT?

Yes, most extended healthcare insurance plans cover a percentage of naturopathic visits. Lab testing and supplements are typically not covered but each plan is different so please check with your provider if you are unsure.

Naturopathic care has many advantages, especially in the current Canadian medical climate with long wait times to see your family doctor (if you even have one). We are highly trained, evidence-based primary care physicians that can utilize a broad range of therapies to achieve your health goals. This includes acupuncture, herbal therapy, nutraceuticals, intravenous therapy, pharmaceuticals and lifestyle counseling. We also have access to laboratory testing through LifeLabs and other private medical laboratories in North America and internationally. Naturopathic doctors have the privilege of being able to take time with each patient to understand their entire health history and their health goals to be able to support patients to the utmost of their ability. The best part is that naturopathic care is individualized for each patient depending on your goals, concerns, budget and preferences.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF NATUROPATHIC CARE?

CAN NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS ORDER LAB TESTS?

Yes, NDs can place a requisition through LifeLabs but the cost is not covered by MSP so patients have to pay out of pocket for labs ordered by a ND. Usually the cost is quite reasonable but if you would prefer to go through your family doctor, I can write a letter to them requesting specific labs be run. We also have access to a variety of private laboratory testing, which I’ve listed on the lab testing page.

Yes, if the ND has their prescribing license they can prescribe pharmaceuticals, which I do.

CAN NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS PRESCRIBE PHARMACEUTICALS?

Yes, please fill out the intake form at least 2 days prior to your first visit and review and sign the consent form. This allows me to have a complete understanding of your health history and prepare accordingly. If you’ve had any recent bloodwork, imaging or other diagnostic testing, please send a copy to the office or bring it to your appointment. If you are taking any medications or supplements, please bring the bottles or a list of what you take, noting the dose, frequency and duration of use, as well as the brand if applicable.
